I would expect sub 2 second scores for top 6 at Nats. Personally.

Since we can use solid state devices, integrated circuits, and microprocessors in our vehicle, this means that we could have something like a pre-programmed Arduino chip controlling our motor correct?

True, but you have to be able to change the time/revolutions to reflect the unknown distance. This program mod comes out of your event time.

You could easily write a program for that by using an lcd and and couple buttons that would allow you to enter in the time/revolutions your motors run for. Even if you do it manually by plugging in the Arduino into your laptop and changing the code, it won't take longer than 20 seconds.

Is there a good place to buy gears as well as a brushless/stepper motor? I have been having trouble finding these to really get started with the event.

If you want a brushless motor, go to your local r/c store. If you want a stepper motor, amazon/ebay is probably your best bet. As for gears, either r/c store if you are going with brushless r/c motor or ebay/amazon/whatever you have in regards to robotics (vex, tetrix, etc) should be sufficient in regards to stepper motors (although I would probably just attach wheel to stepper motor directly.
