To the best of my knowledge, the KI solution mentioned in the rules is Lugol's solution.

Re: Crime Busters B (Zinc Reaction in HCl and iodine)

Post by biojameskim2002 »

Hi all,

I was just wondering how zinc reacts in HCl and iodine. After research online, i found there is a lot of fizz when mixed with HCl, but when I tried that with my own personal tools, there seems to be little to no reaction. What may be the problem in this situation?

Zinc should react with HCl, but oftentimes this reaction is delayed or does not show up clearly as the HCl provided in competitions is diluted. I don't believe iodine is typically used to identify metals.

Color is usually my go-to when identifying zinc as it has a shiny silver color.

I was wondering if we need to bring all powders and fibers or metals
which has to be tested or they will provide it.

The event supervisor will provide all of the unknown materials to be provided. The only things you need to bring are listed in the rules.

You can buy a kit with pretty much everything here https://www.wardsci.com/store/catalog/p ... 470222-058
The only downside is that it is pretty expensive oTL
