Well, doesn't Chalk (limestone, containing carbonates) effervesce? Diatomite doesn't effervesce, at least. Also, Diatomite is lighter than Chalk (diatoms).

If you're given HCl tests, which is certainly not always. But yes, that would work.

You don't need to know them specifically, but you should include info for formations and such in a page for that rock/mineral that the formation is related to. For example, since the Giant's Causeway is made of basalt, in your Basalt section, you should put a picture and a bit of info on the Giant's Causeway.
