Alright,

Image
1. Identify the two species pictured by their Scientific and Common names.
A plant
B animal
2. Explain these two species' ecological relationship.
3. Scenario: You work for the Scioly Parks and Wildlife Department. It has come to your awareness that Lake Scioly has become clogged with species A, which is decreasing boater and angler satisfaction in Lake Scioly State Park. Formulate 2 potential plans of action to control species A, using mechanical, biological, chemical, or other means. Evaluate how long-term effective and ecologically sound these plans are.

1A) Giant Salvinia / Salvinia molesta
1B) Salvinia Weevil / Cyrtobagous salviniae
2) Species B is a predator/biological control of species A
3) Method 1: Use the Salvinia weevil as a biological control. This weevil has been generally successful in controlling the Salvinia as a longterm solution, and ecologically is safe for a biological control, as it has not become invasive itself.
Method 2: Use machines to remove the Salvinia through mechanical control. This is generally only effective for smaller scale infestations and is not always 100% effective, but it is widely regarded as rather ecologically sound as other species are disturbed minimally.

3) Briefly explain the life cycle of this species.
4) This species consumes food through ____________
1) White Spotted Jellyfish Phyllorhiza punctata
2) Low salinities will harm this species by causing them to loose their zoozanthellae.
3) The life cycle of this species involves two distinct phases, the medusa (adult, 2 year) and the polyp (juvenile, 5 year) stage. After fertilization of eggs occurs and larvae are formed, they leave their mother and settle to the ocean floor. Once on the bottom, a polyp form occurs and it reproduces asexually by dividing itself into other polyps. (That may not be specific enough/entirely accurate).
4) Mouthlets.

Nice. What I originally put for #4 was filtration, although your answer works well too. Your turn!!

Oh, I interpreted it as you asking for the anatomical structure instead of the name of the process.

1) Common and scientific name.
2) Which other species on the list does this closely resemble?
3) Give at least 2 ways to distinguish between this species and your answer to question 2.
4) This plant contains compounds of __________ which can be (toxic/beneficial) to some animals.
5) T/F: Because this plant is palatable to livestock, grazing is considered an effective control method.
6) T/F: This plant has flowers that are capable of self-pollination.
