Trick question!
None. It's a rock, not a mineral.

I'm gonna go since nobody posted yet :D

Identify the following, classify it as a mineral, or rock. If it is a mineral, give its chemical structure. What is responsible for the color patterns?

I'm guessing...because I haven't done R&M in literally 2 years
The first thought I had was tourmaline, but maybe it's beryl, else I'm completely wrong :P

asthedeer Tourmaline is correct, specifically liddicoatite. Anyone know if we have to know the specific minerals of the Tourmaline group?

Man, first instinct; woah. I'm legitimately surprised I still remember. :P

I don't think we HAVE have to know them, but I'd put them in a binder or stuff so that if you get asked, you'll have the info.

My turn...I guess.

What is this specimen and what is its most special characteristic?

Ulexite, and whenever you place it on top of something, it shows up on the top surface?

Nevermind, Cherrie_Lan is right. The fibers are parallel to each other.

You're both right....as in, @Cherrie_Lan is right; it's Ulexite--your turn!

Also, I'm LOVING how active this thread is!
