1. Magnetic declination can be found in the bottom center-ish left of a quad (at least for USGS 7.5 series maps) It is abbreviated by the term MN, which stands for Magnetic North. It is often a certain amount of degrees east or west of true north (indicated by the line with the star) and will often have a mileage to substitute with the degrees.

2. Stream Gradient is the gradient of water (rivers, streams, other things...) and is measured in either degrees, or feet up or down, per every 1000 feet.

Slope gradient is the equivalent for land, and is measured per every 100 feet.

New question: Why are maps within a certain series, and what does it mean? (7.5 minute series quad, or 15 minute series quad...)

I also have a fun riddle like question that I thought would be fun:
A man walks one mile south, one mile west, and one mile north.
He ends up in the same place he started.
Where on planet Earth is he?

Can you find the second possible location?
Problems are better pursued with General Electric GE90-115 engines.

The number (such as the given 7.5 or 15) tells the length and width of the area the quadrangle represents in minutes of latitude and longitude

Answer to the riddle: Because earth is an oblate spheroid, at the north pole all 'directions' point south. Therefore, starting from the north pole, moving south, then west (along a parallel), then north would bring you back to the north pole.

And just north of the south pole, so the circumference is exactly one mile around!

Anyway, Airfields are often dashed rectangles, or if paved, a solid rectangle. All aprons and taxiways should be outlined too.

New Question: Billy lives in Nashville, and wants to find the PLSS of his house. Can he do this? or not...

Nope! Nashville is in Tennessee, which isn't included in the PLSS. Here's a new question:
If you see a 'BM' on a quadrangle map, what is it indicating?

Bench Mark, or in other words, those benches you find at the park that have some dead dude buried underneath it.

What is the name of the river that flows from Grand Junction (western Colorado) to the Gulf of Mexico

great now im going to be thinking of dead people on park benches every time im taking a road scholar test

as for the answer, could it be the Colorado River? (not sure on this one)

Question: Do odd numbered interstate routes run E-W or N-S?

Ha! Gottem! first of all, the Colorado river flows into the gulf of california. (that long gulf thing in Mexico). But the real answer is NONE! why? because western Colorado is on the west side of the continental divide :)

In regard to your question:

2 complete years of Road Scholar (including 2 National tourneys), legit almost every RS test on the world wide web, and I've never come across a question of the sort:)

(in other words: I don't know)

:o
