3. Why are several short peaks present around each larger one?

Why is acetone a good solvent to use for paper chromatography on permanent markers?

Acetone is nonpolar. Permanent markers use nonpolar ink (so water won't wash it away). Like dissolves like, so the acetone can actually move the permanent marker ink up the paper.

I believe acetone is polar, but it shares both polar and nonpolar properties. Please correct me if I am wrong. Regardless, your turn :--)
