Sometimes Science Olympiad works in unpredictable ways. Tests are always different, and sometimes stress plays a factor. My guess is Seven Lakes just had an unlucky day. They are still one heck of a good team.
2017 Results:

Astronomy: 3 | NC | 1 | NC | -
Hovercraft: 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | -

Such is the way of Texas State, arguably one of the most volatile tournaments in SciO.

Y'all better start recruiting more teams. Vermont is joining Science Olympiad.

I thought Florida (in B) and Missouri (in C) were at the bottom of the two-teams list as of this past national tournament

True, but (based on 2016 numbers since we don't have 2017 yet) if Missouri gains even 10 Div C teams that may be enough for them to pass Texas C. In addition, Florida is one of the fastest growing states, so they'll probably pass Texas and/or Missouri in the next few years.

Some changes to the state website.

Looks like there's 4 confirmed invitationals so far: One confirmed regional: I believe the Katy Regional Tournament will be on either 3/3 or 3/24 but it is not confirmed

State tournament:
