Yeah, either VLC or Media Player Classic (with codecs) will work. Definitely ditch WMP.

There are multiple ways of doing this. You could right click each file and click save as and save it to your desktop. Open up VLC and go to File > Open and open the file. You could drag and drop the file into VLC. I have all filetypes associated with VLC so when I just open the file, it will open with VLC.
