What would the components in an such as that cost?

Very impressive design. Nice to finally see a perfect score.
I believe it ended up being about 300-400$ for everything, probably less. Here is the parts list for the dispenser 3d-printer-like assembly if anyone's interested:

2x Timing Belt and pulley- https://www.amazon.com/Aluminum-Pulley- ... iming+belt

2x Stepper motor mounts- http://www.ebay.com/itm/US-Shipping-Nem ... SwnFZXVYWW

2x Stepper motors- http://www.ebay.com/itm/US-Ship-Short-B ... 1602354895

6x Linear rail shafts- http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-4pcs-8mm-SK ... SwLzdWRCiN

2x 40cm Steel Shaft- http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/1417765615 ... noapp=true

2x linear bearing blocks- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018X9NH04/re ... B00IJ67BJA

1x Large linear bearing block- https://www.adafruit.com/products/1180

As for the gripper arm we used 3-270 degree servos - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B018E ... UTF8&psc=1
and servo blocks for each joint to ensure stability - https://www.amazon.com/ServoBlocks-Hub- ... rvo+blocks

We had it laser cut by Ponoko out of plastic that was the same thickness as the penny.

To Jander more specifically:
I know that this is not the place for official clarifications and such etc etc...
Under the SO laser policy: "Laser and high-brightness LED devices are intended to be operated under the control of a human operator at all times"
Would an aiming laser aimed at the target turned on and off autonomously by a robot be illegal?

Yes, it is illegal and you've quoted the exact section it violates.

Was this using National scoring? I don't believe that the state scoring allows for anything above a mid-400.

My bad. I'm still thinking invitational scoring.
