Can someone please simply explain to me what is the Public Land Survey System? I've studied it but I still can't understand what it is and what it has to do with topographic maps. Thanks

It's a system developed for dividing up land acquired during westward expansion in the US, to make surveying and property relations simpler. I don't think it specifically has anything to do with topo maps, except that frequently a topo map is of the same size as one of the PLSS measurements.

(that's basically the extent of my knowledge about PLSS)

It's a system developed for dividing up land acquired during westward expansion in the US, to make surveying and property relations simpler. I don't think it specifically has anything to do with topo maps, except that frequently a topo map is of the same size as one of the PLSS measurements.

It has everything to do with topo maps. Unome basically covered it, though. A sample PLSS is T15N/R10E/35/SW1/4/NW1/4. The T15N and R10E are the township and range. They, as Unome stated, divided up land in westward expansion. Each 1 by 1 square is (I think) an acre. The 35 is the section number. They were used to divide land up, too. You will often find them in small red text, scattered all over the map. The SW1/4/NW1/4 are the specific location in the section. You read these backwards. So you cut the section into four, then leave the NW section, then do the same with the section that is left, and so on.

Yep, the PLSS is a system that separates the US into 7.5 minute maps. It stands for Public Land Survey System.

Yep, the PLSS is a system that separates the US into 7.5 minute maps. It stands for Public Land Survey System.

I don't think that it separates the US into 7.5 minute maps, as then Kentucky, etc. wouldn't be 7.5 minute.
