Re: Disease Detectives B/C
1. Fungi
2. 40 F to 140 F
3. Incubation (period from the initial entrance of the organisms to the time when 1st sign and symptoms appear.) Prodromal (early signs and symptoms)
Acute (maximum symptoms, most contagious) Convalescent (Recovery, feeling better. # Of organisms are declining, still contagious) 4. when sample sizes are small. 5. Prion? I think

I think #1 is supposed to be yeast.Killboe wrote:1. Fungi 2. 40 F to 140 F 3. Incubation (period from the initial entrance of the organisms to the time when 1st sign and symptoms appear.) Prodromal (early signs and symptoms)

I do notice, though, that for #1 he said "agent", while for #5 he said "pathogen".Killboe wrote:He said "Agent" so i think it should be a microbe

Either is fine, although I was looking for yeast. Also, for four, I would specifically mention expected cells containing a value less than 5, although I believe either is correct. Your turn!

Whoops, forgot about this...
1. Define the following terms. a. Virulence b. Pathogenicity c. Infectivity d. Compromised host e. Herd immunity 2. List the ten steps in an epidemiological investigation.

1. a. Virulence is the relative severity of the diseaseTailsfan101 wrote:Whoops, forgot about this...1. Define the following terms. a. Virulence b. Pathogenicity c. Infectivity d. Compromised host e. Herd immunity 2. List the ten steps in an epidemiological investigation.
b. Pathogenicity is the ability of the agent to cause disease.
c. The ability of a pathogen to establish an infection
d. A person who has a weakened immune system and is, therefore, more susceptible to disease.
e. Immunizing a large enough amount of the population so that disease cannot spread through the population, despite possible unimmunized people.
2. 1. Prepare for field work
2. Establish the existence of an outbreak
3. Verify the diagnosis
4. Define and identify cases
5. Describe and orient the data in terms of time, place, and person
6. Develop hypotheses
7. Evaluate hypotheses epidemiologically
8. Refine hypotheses and carry out additional studies
9. Implement control and prevention measures
10. Communicate findings
