The standard and easiest way is to have a peg in the axle. When you wrap the string around, you first do it in one direction, and then around the peg and then in the other direction.

The more difficult way to do it is to have one mousetrap push it forwards and the other go in the reverse. This method has been done, but it's pretty difficult to accomplish well, because you need to find a consistent way of triggering the second trap.

Is the more difficult way generally better?

The better way is the one that produces the best results. The difficulty by which that’s achieved is irrelevant.

It's been a long time since Mousetrap was last an event In Div C. There's probably not many people around here that would be able to give an answer to which way works better without thorough testing.

Lol this is a much better answer. I didn’t read the context.

To reverse direction, would the use of a wing nut work instead of a peg around the axle? Thanks.

That’d work. Anything that you can wrap a string around

You would have to be more specific in exactly how you're using and attaching the wingnut.

Doc fizzix has a good way. He uses a small wire tie and then puts a drop of glue on it after it is as tight as it will go. Quick, and easy way to go. Watch out that you do not have it where the tie end will catch on the string. If it does, take it off and put another on on in the opposite direction.
