That’s 100 grams and a mousetrap weighs from 60-70 grams. Add the axles, wheels, dowel, and string you get at LEAST 200 grams. Correct me if I’m wrong.

I'm at around 200 grams, but it's definitely doable in 100.
Mousetraps weigh about 40, body can be 10, breaking system 15, 5 grams of front axle + power arm and 40 grams worth of wheels.

Our team is hoping to get about 5 points
I think everyone "hopes" to get 5 points. User anonymous with 3 posts, seems likely to be trolling.

200 is decently easy to achieve. Sub 150 with high accuracy is when things become difficult.

Agreed as our team has had difficulty making a light accurate vehicle :| Not that it's not possible

mousetraps combined around 50. I'm sure they used large "attachment holes" so maybe 2 more grams or so off.

100 is possible with maybe a balsa frame. Would need insane craftsmanship to first not break and then to actually be accurate. Could be possible with very minimal frame & localized weights at each wheel.

to get a score of 5 you'd NEED a 0 distance score basically, boggling

Yes, you could build a very light vehicle, but landing on top of the target point would be sort of like a scoring a hole-in-one in golf. In an actual competition you encounter different surfaces, atmospheric conditions, plastic cups, and you only get two runs. To be able to adjust predictably between runs you need enough wheel tread on the floor and weight in your MTV to have any chance of success.

All this talk of ultra-light weight cars makes me miss wheeled vehicle, where you could build the car as heavy as you wanted and just use massive surgical tubes to make it go fast. Those were the days...
