PICTURES, SCORES, VIDEOS!!!
Just like last year, we will have a pictures, scores, and videos thread.
Here are pictures

Also, would anyone, perhaps balsa man want to predict scores for this year.
Im guessing nats winning will be 3500+ nats medaling 2800+ and states to be above 2k.

Re: PICTURES, SCORES, VIDEOS!!!
I think you're overestimating scores - I'd expect Nationals-medaling to be possible at ~2500 or so in Div C (maybe a few hundred more, depending on how the bonus goes) and ~2700 or so in Div B. Being two-tiered will probably push down scores a bit.

Re: PICTURES, SCORES, VIDEOS!!!
While the two part design is harder to build, I feel as if the bonus is pretty overpowered. I wouldn't be surprised if the winning scores at Nationals are ~3800.Unome wrote:I think you're overestimating scores - I'd expect Nationals-medaling to be possible at ~2500 or so in Div C (maybe a few hundred more, depending on how the bonus goes) and ~2700 or so in Div B. I predict some crazy guy gets a 4,000 with a crazy 5g tower. Most scores at nats I feel will revolve around the 2.5k mark (a slightly more than 7g tower w/ bonus) at the 1-15th places? That would be a pretty good score. (This is Div C)

Once we're done...really running the numbers, might be able to come up with something I could call a prediction. At this point, a semi-informed WAG.
There's no question in my mind that winners will be 29cm circle bonus towers; the +5kg payoff is too big to overcome with non-bonus design. To beat a 5gr non-bonus tower, a bonus tower could be at just over 6.66gr. That's a lot more lumber.
The difference between B and C will probably be a bit smaller than last year.
The numbers above... don't strike me as unreasonable

Deffinitely the new 8 cm rule will draw back the scores a bit, but the bonus will make up ground. I expect it to be similar to last year. Building precisely will be key.Unome wrote:I think you're overestimating scores - I'd expect Nationals-medaling to be possible at ~2500 or so in Div C (maybe a few hundred more, depending on how the bonus goes) and ~2700 or so in Div B. Re: PICTURES, SCORES, VIDEOS!!!
I have tested two bonus C division towers so far this year. Both have yielded dissapointing scores,
Tower 1- 6.8g, held 4kg+5kg= 1400
Tower 2- 8.28, held 7kg+5kg= 1500
Both towers have had failure in the base, and I am working on getting the right design and bracing amount. I started building towers after combing through the 2011-2012 tower forums. I recommend everyone to not over-engineer the chimney, though it may seem larger. Especially in the bonus tower bases, a sharp angle is formed and compression force is shooting my towers down. X bracings dont seem to have much of a benefit in the base, imo
They are both rectangular bonus towers
Just some thoughts

Re: PICTURES, SCORES, VIDEOS!!!
Top two scores at Forsyth Central last weekend were both a bit over 1200. Chances are, the state-winning towers in Georgia will be right around 2000 again.

Based on preliminary testing, I would agree. 4000 seems possible if well builtRaleway wrote:I predict some crazy guy gets a 4,000 with a crazy 5g tower.
