I would imagine about a month after the rules come out, so I would be looking at early to mid October.

Elastic Launched Gliders is perhaps the easiest flight event to do without a kit. Few materials involved and few pieces to cut, maybe just a lot of sanding. I encourage you to try making one with balsa sheets (for the wings and stabilizer) and balsa sticks (for the fuselage). For your launch handle, you can attach leftover Wright Stuff rubber to a dowel. There are many guides out there for making and testing gliders, and you're always welcome to ask any questions on forums.

In the past, Freedom flight's ELG kit was probably the best because of the flight information provided.
Stan Buddembahm's S/O Lit'l sweep is a very competitive model and quite a bit cheaper and simpler as he does not use the foam flapper approach. Laser cut planes will probably sell kits again. Years ago it was far too heavy, but I have heard that the last kit was competitive.
Search building a SO glider AMA for an hour long tutorial which should be a must for a beginner.

Search the blog from the last time this event was held and look for comments or pictures of an alternative launch system. The simple one is a piece of wood like a 2x4 with a shallow slot and a "handle" in front to attach the rubber band. One school got very elaborate and built a launch system that they could tightly control the variables for a given site. They put a :whoa: on this, but most of it could be still used last time. The value of this is you have a good control of the slant angle and the vertical angle. An even bigger value is the rubber band does not snap back during the launch and tear up a wing. They found this out with high speed photography.

You can also buy a cheap kiddie unit at a hobby store and practice. It is not competitive, but you can gain some valuable experience to go along with the AMA video over the summer.

super glue works well for rebuilding broken gliders.

Even tho you do not have the 2019 rules yet, there is a lot of work that can be done over the summer which will make you competitive in many contests.

A cheap head start is to google white wings and look at the options. There is free guidance for card stock and foam gliders . The white wings gliders have grown too expensive for a cheap start. Look at the balsa gliders in hobby shops for under $5.00.
The size is wrong, but the principles of construction and flight are similar. A fun learning tool.

Do not be shocked if canards return to either gliders or wright stuff for a significant bonus.
