Does anyone have an idea of how to tell sugar and salt apart (beside from tasting them)?

Wow, another user from Hawaii! Now I actually need the second hand to count the Hawaii users on this site.
When using a magnifying glass or looking closely, salt appears cube-shaped while sugar is irregular. This is perhaps the easiest way to distinguish them.

Thanks for the information! Good luck at states! (I assume you go to Mililani and went to Highlands because you went to nationals for the past 3 years)

Salt is a purer white than sugar, which can be yellowish and clumps more, but shape is by far the best way to ID.

From what I’ve seen, sugar is also shinier (if it doesn’t have a colored tint).

What is the best to study for crime busters because I got this event and I have no idea what I am doing and how to study.

Look through the wiki(copy and paste that as a cheatsheet to start), then learn to identify powders.
National website is also full of resources.

It really helps to have all of the materials (powders, metals, hcl, iodine, liquids, plastics, fibers, testing kits/supplies, etc) so you can practice frequently. The scioly wiki is really good for crime busters. I don't find the stuff on soinc that useful, but you can take a look.
