Re: Science Olympiad at Penn Invitational 2021
Hello all SOUP Participants!
We are pleased to announce our 6th annual Penn Science Olympiad Invitational will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2021!
-- Logistics --
The tournament will be on Saturday, February 26, 2021 from 10 AM ET to 5 PM ET.
We hope to bring students back to Penn’s campus, and we are currently exploring options to ensure the safety of an in-person invitational. We are remaining vigilant and monitoring the ever-evolving situation of the pandemic to develop a safe and intellectually stimulating tournament. However, we ask teams to be prepared for the possibility of a fully virtual tournament where electronic tests will be administered through the Scilympiad platform.
-- Tournament Format --
All of our events will be run using National-level rules, with minor modifications to the event structure to accommodate the possibility of social distancing measures or a virtual tournament. A detailed list of changes will be announced to registered teams.
Events will be scheduled following the 2021-2022 National schedule. A detailed schedule with team numbers will be sent to registered teams.
Currently, build events will count toward teams’ final scores as the tournament will be in-person. Pre-builds will be impounded the day of the tournament by 8 AM ET. However, the weightage of build events is flexible to change, and details of these changes will be announced to registered teams. In the event of a virtual tournament, students must submit their videos by 9 am ET on Saturday, February 26, 2021. These videos will be scored on a rolling basis on the day of the tournament.
We expect students to give their best effort while displaying honesty, integrity, and good sportsmanship. All teams are expected to follow our tournament rules and abide by the Science Olympiad Code of Ethics.
-- Registration --
We will host 60 teams this year. Schools can register at most 2 teams. Each team may have a maximum of 15 members, per the National rules. Please ensure that each team has at least 10 members, as we wish to accommodate as many participants as possible.
The registration fee for this year’s tournament is $75 per team, regardless of tournament format, and must be paid by registered teams within one month of registering. This fee will be waived for Philadelphia district schools.
To register, please use this Google Form Link (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1nouDk2 ... closedform) on Thursday, September 23rd, 2021 at 3:00 PM ET. The first 60 teams will be notified and any additional teams that register will be placed on a waitlist. Teams on the waitlist may have an opportunity to compete if the tournament is virtual. The link will also be available at our website.
To receive a refund of the registration fee (and forfeit their spot in the tournament), teams can submit a full refund request by January 1, 2021.

Re: Science Olympiad at Penn Invitational 2022
Hello Everyone!
We hope you are doing well! As we are approaching the New Year, we have made an official decision about SOUP’s tournament format.
Unfortunately, with the recent uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 and the new variant, we decided to make the 2022 SOUP Invitational an online event. Guidelines for the pandemic on Penn’s campus in the spring are likely to change, and we do not want to risk having to cancel an in-person tournament. With the ever-changing circumstances, we believe that an online tournament will be the best and safest option for everyone in the spring. Rest assured, we will work tirelessly to make the event as engaging and fun for the participants as possible.
With the shift in the tournament format, we have decided to expand the number of participating teams from 60 teams to 80 teams. Emails have been sent to schools with confirmation on their teams' status. Below are further details for the event:

We truly appreciate your patience in these uncertain times, and please email us at [email protected] if you have any further questions, comments, or concerns. We will get back to you as soon as possible. We hope everyone has a great week!
Best,
SOUP Executive Board
