Science Olympiad at MIT Invitational 2021

Post by SciOly at MIT »

We are pleased to announce that the 7th annual MIT Science Olympiad Invitational Tournament will take place virtually on Friday, January 22nd, and Saturday, January 23rd, 2021. The awards ceremony will be livestreamed at 8PM ET either the following Friday, January 29th, or Sunday, January 31st, depending on overall team preference.

Following the mini SO model, we will be running 18 of the regular 23 Division C national events on Scilympiad and providing competitors with the flexibility to take tests any time in a 48-hour testing window. All events will be written, reviewed, and run by Science Olympiad alumni currently at MIT, national tournament event supervisors, and/or former Science Olympiad competitors from the highest level of competition. This means that coaches will not be required to write tests or otherwise volunteer at the invitational, leaving them free to focus solely on coaching their own teams.

Registration will open on Saturday, September 12th, 2020, at 6PM ET and will close promptly the following Sunday, September 20th, at 6PM ET. Teams will be notified of their acceptance on Monday, September 28th, and a public list of participating teams will be announced on Sunday, October 11th. If interest exceeds 150 teams, acceptance will be determined by lottery, with guaranteed acceptance of schools that have placed Top 20 at either the 2020 MIT Invitational or the 2019 National Tournament.

As we continue to grow our tournament, we aim to maintain a diverse pool of competitors while also upholding the rigor of our tournament. As such, we strongly encourage all teams to apply, regardless of their reputation or experience level. Registration is currently limited to one team per school but please indicate whether you would be interested in having a second team on the registration form.

More information on our tournament and registration can be found on our website, scioly.mit.edu. Further details about implementation will be released closer to the tournament. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. We look forward to the upcoming season!

I wonder how some of these teams are splitting between MIT and Solon, or if they're doing both. Perhaps that will affect the standings. Regardless, it's a very strong lineup, very exciting.

For reference the teams from this list attending both Solon and MIT are: Rustin, Boca, Carmel, Clark (P), Lower Merion (P), Mason, New Trier, Northville, Solon, WWPN

(P) means only pre-registered for Solon.

MIT on Friday and Solon on Saturday. It will be a lot, but should be an exciting weekend!

To be honest, I like back-to-back. I have wondered for years (and during a normal, non-pandemic year) if MIT would ever be willing to have their invite on any given Saturday followed by the Harvard the next day on Sunday. Teams that travel could then compete at both, back-to-back during the same trip.

I've never thought about that but I really like that idea, it would extend the trip by only one day and is a lot more cost effective. Might cause some burnout though.

Since MIT's this weekend, I figured I'd put together a prediction contest (modelled after the traditional Fantasy SO):
https://forms.gle/foNhHmF2rWiSXZL59

School Prediction rules: Submit once. Vote for one school at most once and no more. You will get 5 points for predicting a school on the dot, 3 points for 1 off, 2 points for 2 off, 1 point for 3 off, and none for more than 3 off.

Event Prediction rules: Submit once. Your score is the sum of all the event placements of each of your school choices. In the case that a school sends two teams, the event placement will be the higher of the two. You may select one school up to FIVE times.*

*Excludes Trials

Good luck! Prediction contest ends 1/22 11:59 PM EST!
