  • Springhouse was above all the other PA teams by a decent amount (260 vs 384 points)
  • I was surprised about how well Mountain View did, they beat Eagle View by a significant amount (last year, Eagle View was slightly better than them)
  • I don't really know how to interpret SSA's result, especially since they didn't compete at Rustin last year. Seems to be a relatively standard year for them? I don't know
  • Harlan Rowe... probably hit hard by the lack of builds, and I think they may have lost a lot of 9th graders (don't quote me on this). Eagle View was right behind them so it'll be interesting to see if they remain this close as the season progresses.
  • Strath Haven and Bala Cynwyd were about 100 points behind eagle view/harlan rowe, with Strath Haven beating Bala by about 50 points. To be honest both of these schools did better than I expected them to, good job to them :)
  • Overall, it's looking like states is going to be very exciting this year in division b! I wonder if mountain view will make nats 👀
Darn, I got so excited when I saw someone mentioning Strath Haven, but it's about the middle school :(

I have heard a bit about PA combining regionals this year. By the sounds of it, all regionals are held on the same day and use the same materials, so I frankly don't understand why this decision is necessary. It's not like you need a minimum amount of teams to make using a facility worth it. I can understand the desire to not have some regionals significantly smaller than others, but why artificially combine regionals when unnecessary?

I did some analysis of the registered teams and where they would have typically competed. I came up with the following:

Division B
C 12
CE 5
NE 8
NW 6
SE 12
SW 9

Division C
C 18
CE 16
NE 18
NW 7
SEN 17
SES 12
SW 18

From this, it seems like the logical combinations would be: NE+CE and SW+NW in Division B, and SW+NW in Division C. I don't really see the need to combine beyond that; it helps maintain the typical regional structure, and having a smallest regional size of 12 teams is more than reasonable, in my opinion.

Am I missing something? Why would there be a need to make this more complex than it needs to be?

I believe schools can bring more than one team to Regionals.

For comparison, the largest B regional in a typical year was Southeast. In 2019 and 2020, they had 23 teams. This year, the regionals are 27 and 25 teams, respectively. How does this make any sense in a year like this?

Typically I am in pretty solid lockstep with PASO, but I could not disagree more with how regionals are being run this year. It was a perfect year to give extra recognition to the teams that are sticking it out to compete. Artificially making the regionals larger than they need to be does not accomplish anything tangible, and only hurts the mid/low-tier teams. My only hope is that once we return to a conventional climate, we will return to the old system, which was pretty balanced and one of the best regional arrangements I have seen in the nation.

If there's some major factor I'm overlooking, I would love to hear it.

The major factor is probably acquiring as many event supervisors, or just people in general to administer the tests in the case of PA. We're seeing that a bit in GA.

Wouldn't having the tournaments all be simultaneous, virtual, and using the same tests reduce the demand for supervisors/judges? I guess I am not completely familiar with the administration of tournaments on Scilympiad.
