Dusting: dust is brushed onto the surface and it sticks to the fingerprint
Silver nitrate: the silver nitrate reacts with salt in the fingerprint
Iodine fuming: iodine is vaporized and absorbed by the oils in the fingerpint

I would definitely get my hands on any practice test I could find, and do a lot of research in every part of the test, even if it seems irrelevant, because major competitions tend to ask "different" types of questions on their tests. But overall, just research online and look through many tests, and of course, use the scioly wiki page, which is a great starting point for any event.
