Supposedly you wouldn't be required to know said genus for each bird (I believe), but of course since all data about the birds is fair game this doesn't really matter - even though the genus was removed, competitions can (and have) test on it.

My partners and I have speculated that it was because the writers of the list were just lazy, hence the numerous errors.
The trial event list had all of the genera and species names, so it might be wise to have that in the binder for quick access.(You can write in the new species.)
The taxonomy is really not up to date, but I believe that is typical of ID event lists.

I was wondering where a good source to get name origins would be, such as what a birds name is based off, or why. Thanks!

I don't have any specific source I get it from, but googling often helps. Wikipedia and allaboutbirds often have something about it. Also keep in mind many common names are onomatopoeia of their calls.
