Question for everyone here:

Let's say I have a gear with 10 teeth and a mating gear with 30 teeth.

To achieve a 3:1 ratio is the 10 teeth gear the driving gear or the driven gear?

Gear ratio is defined as output:input, so the gear with 10 teeth would be driving the gear with 30 teeth.

That's what I thought. I wanted everyone to know and be clear about it as there could be competitors using a 1:3 ratio instead by mistake.

NSO posted the following relevant FAQ:

Question:
"a 3:1 rato gear system. . ." Does this mean output teeth/input teeth = 3, or the other way around? Thanks.

Response:
The rules don't specify the direction it must go.

I have a 3:1 ratio gear system initiating the screw/wing nut action, while the gears run so is the screw/wing nut. The ES at our last invitational said that they were parallel actions. The rules state that the 3:1 ratio gear system initiates the next action, but does not specify minimum rotations to complete the gear action. I posted a question on the FAQ at sonic.org, but no reply yet. Can anyone comment on this?. Thank you

I would say that as long as the gear system initiates the next action, (which it sounds like yours does) then it doesn't matter how much it should turn since there is no specification.

Could the 3:1 gear ratio pull on a string which lift a golf ball up (action vii) or would i need to do something like push a weight which lifts the golf ball?

How can you claim a gear system is 3:1 if it doesn't do the rotations as expected?

There is no minimum rotation given.

The gear system must initiate the next action, if you word your ASL carefully, you should be able to make that work.
I can't think of anything else to put here, so I just wrote this...
