Operational Knowledge of Basic Device Components Test
Does anyone know what the operational knowledge of basic device components part of the test exactly entails? Does it mean understand how a thermistor or LED or Microcontroller works? Thanks.

Re: Operational Knowledge of Basic Device Components Test
Yes. The test is the most important part of the event - anyone who has any idea what they're doing will have essentialy the exact same device score, so it essential to have a competent understanding of the components. Even at a fairly small tournament (Boyceville Invitational), the top teams were all above 133 points - the maximum is 135.

Re: Operational Knowledge of Basic Device Components Test
The rules are pretty open ended. Relationships between voltage temperature and resistance ... well, that hints at the sensor types and materials. LED operation, ok but basic device components end up being half circuit lab and presumably data relationships is sort of half statistics. The tie breaker from last year on the event supervisor guide does hint, but it practically could go anywhere. Any clues from anyone who has been to an invitational?

Re: Operational Knowledge of Basic Device Components Test
Today I took the test from the CMU invitational and it was completely different from every other test I've taken. Not only was it 100% circuits, but it was college level circuits as well. I was under the impression that they would only test circuit knowledge relevant to the device itself, not wave rectifiers and op-amps. Should I prepare for this type of material as well, or was this test just an outlier?
