Xiangyu,

Motor stick wood from the FF kits is probably not usable for Penny Plane. Most of the motor stick wood in the FF kits we received was 4 - 4.5 lb cu ft (very light and soft) and is too flexible for motor sticks until the 3k carbon tow is applied. As carbon tow on motor sticks is not allowed in Penny Plane, you'll need higher density wood for the motor sticks.

Also, the .039" carbon rod wing spar material in the FF kit, while fine for 8.0 gram SO airplanes, is too heavy for Penny Plane. You wont be able to build the Carbon Penny wing to the 0.8 g target unless you use the .015"x.038" carbon strip recommended (or, in the past, Bill G. used two stacked .020" rods, for wing spars, but the strip wasn't available in those days and is an easier and same weight solution that is plenty stiff enough).

You could use the .020" rod in the FF kit for stab spars, but, I don't remember, is it cut too short for the Carbon Penny?

I see. Thanks for all the detailed guidance! I will ask here if I have questions or encounter problems during the build! :D

One more question. For the wing covering, is microfilm the same thing as mylar? I see people in tutorials use microfilm for pennyplanes and F1Ds so I was wondering if I need to get some as I only have the mylar covering from Freedom Flight.

Currently, use either the Ultrafilm (like FFM supplies), or try Super Ultra Film (See Ray Harlan or FAI Model Supply). Super is thinner than the SO version, and will help make weight.

Microfilm is old school, where you made a film by dripping chemicals on a smooth pool of water.

We used the Super for LPP.

Do you guys think they will at least change the specifications for next year?

they may or may not. This is quite an unprecedented situation, so nobody really knows what will happen with the rules for any events.

Well, it doesn't mention Wright Stuff explicitly, so i still think it could go both ways. Although, after reading the article, especially regarding the resources cost part, I'm starting to think that the specs might not change for next year. :(

I mean, next year if they allow for bigger stabs and props with no other changes this year's planes would technically still be viable, assuming you got yours to actually fly very well.
