I have a question about topographic maps, what does "series" mean? I know the typical map is a 7.5 minute series but is this just a name to classify the map? Any clarification or explanation would be nice, thanks in advance!

7.5 minute refers to the amount of area that the map covers, which is 7.5' latitude by 7.5' longitude. The 7.5 minute comes from the distance between the horizontal neat lines or the vertical neat lines. The word series doesn't mean anything particular, just that the "series" or classification of the map is 7.5 minuteMauBerry wrote:I have a question about topographic maps, what does "series" mean? When I competed in this event, I always brought a magnifying lens and in the 5 competitions I did this event in, they never said anything about not being allowed to have it, so I would assume that they should be fine?
