I have a question about topographic maps, what does "series" mean? I know the typical map is a 7.5 minute series but is this just a name to classify the map? Any clarification or explanation would be nice, thanks in advance!

7.5 minute refers to the amount of area that the map covers, which is 7.5' latitude by 7.5' longitude. The 7.5 minute comes from the distance between the horizontal neat lines or the vertical neat lines. The word series doesn't mean anything particular, just that the "series" or classification of the map is 7.5 minute

When I competed in this event, I always brought a magnifying lens and in the 5 competitions I did this event in, they never said anything about not being allowed to have it, so I would assume that they should be fine? Might wanna check with the supervisor to make sure though.

Why would you need a magnifying glass anyways?

I always found myself not really needing to use it unless my contacts were being screwy and messing with my vision.

I only ask since I am an old man who wears bifocals and occasionally has difficulty reading small print... but only when coaching Road Scholar :geek:
