Geologic Mapping C

Post by OrigamiPlanet »

Welcome to the Div. C event Geologic Mapping and its Question Marathon!

For starters:
1. Define the azimuth
2. What is Earth's irregular shape that represents the surface at "zero elevation" called?
3. True/False: An anticline will always be an antiform, but an antiform will not always be an anticline.

Oh boy...
1. The azimuth is an angle that describes the direction of a vector quantity, measured clockwise from north I think?
2. Sea level?
3. False: There are antiformal synclines and synformal anticlines.

1 and 3 are good, but for 2 I was looking for the term geoid. You still got the other two right! Your turn!

All right, cool!

Describe the differences between normal and reverse faults, including the stresses that cause them.

[hide]A normal fault the top part runs down and has compression. a reverse fault it goes up and has tension.
[/hide]
whats the difference between an anticline and an antiform?

Use

Code: Select all

[answer]Answer[/answer]
to conveniently hide your answer :)
In an anticline, the oldest layers are on the bottom while in an antiform, the layers are U-shaped
I did that off the top of my head, so hopefully I didn't mix them up...

is good and all if you want to avoid the pipeline, but you can't put whatever you want in the first blank (i.e. if you want to say question instead of answer, you'd have to use [hide])

I think that's right, but for an antiform it's just any fold that slopes up i guess(i think)

Strike and dip relate to slopes. The strike traces a line of equal elevation, and the dip traces the line of fastest descent. The strike and dip are perpendicular to each other.
