we have everyone rank their top 5 events, and why they think they'd be good for that event, then assign events based on experience and classes. we then add some backups to each event just in case of conflicts when the schedule is released

Everyone lists their top 5, which get written on a massive wall of whiteboard (arranged by conflict block so nobody tries to sign up for events that happen at the same time). Then everyone discovers that 5 of the events have half the team wanting to do them and another 5-10 have nobody, and the team guilt-trips each other into picking up the unwanted events.

We all list our top 7 events, then our head coaches organize the people based off of what they want - similar to what knightmoves said.

For our high school team, I got everybody (12 people) to list what events they wanted to do and then I tried to fit them to the Conestoga schedule. And then I'll repeat that for Regionals. Since we only have 12 people, if someone wants a different event, they can usually work out something with the people already doing that event.

for our team we have a signup sheet and everyone signs up for any event. everyone, no matter how good you are, competes for rustin and gv (we have 3 teams for invites) then we narrow it down to 15 based on how well everyone does at invites
