It's similar to Robo-Cross from a couple years ago. The arm stays stationary, but has to pick up objects around a field and place them in containers.

By the way, First Robotics isn't like battle bots. It's more of a strategy game type thing.

Had one other question- on the Sci Oly official site, there's two different Food Science trial events. One is called Food Chem B 2012 and requires competitorsto bake cookies using limited ingredients, the other just says Food Science and is a test. Does anyone know which (if any) of these two will be used?

The rules haven't been finalized yet, so neither is likely to be exactly like the final published rules, however I'd guess that the first one is closer to it based upon the name.

Is there any one place where we can see a tentative list of all 2011/2012 events?

Nothing is officially posted (obviously rules committee chairs like myself have various 'internal' documents that detail this). There is a link earlier in this thread I think to the Summer Institute schedule, which can be deciphered to determine most of the events, however I think there was an error in that too.

http://soinc.org/sites/default/files/up ... -17-11.pdf <--here is the website just for reference again.

If someone can compile a list of events that are possible and probable for next year that'll be great. :)
Valley Forge Invitational 2012:
1st Microbe Mission (with 50/94 lol), 3rd Dynamic Planet, 4th Chem Lab (sigh..)

Central MD Regionals 2012:
1st Forensics, 1st Dynamic Planet, 2nd Microbe Mission, 2nd Chem Lab, 2nd Anatomy

If seemingly permanent events like Ecology are rotated out, I don't see why Write it Do it or Experimental Design never get rotated out. Maybe they will one day.
When it comes to the future, there are three kinds of people: those who let it happen, those who make it happen, and those who wonder what happened.

...because there's no analogue for them? This is SCIENCE Olympiad, so Experimental Design is central. I can't think of a process event that could replace Experimental Design and not cheat one year of students out of their scientific method knowledge. I mean, can you get any more science-y than "here's a problem, go collect some data and test your hypothesis"?

I would disagree that you could not think of events comparable to Experimental design. There could very easily be a testing event based on the scientific method. Experimental Design is kind of limited to a point because it is a lab event. The people running the event have to find enough supplies for everyone, so the experiments end up being pretty trivial and useless. Experimental could easily be on a rotation with a non-lab based event where you have to be an expert on the experimental method, and you could write up meaningful experiments without actually testing them, rather than actually writing up and testing meaningless ones.

Write it Do it could also be on a rotation with Picture This, those both involve communicating scientific ideas to others.

Of course, some people do Experimental Design without actually doing the experiment >.>
