You might be better off asking a question in each of those event forums.

In herpetology your best friend is your binder

Make the pages really big and nice and easy to handle really quickly because the way my tests did it were in stations where we had about 30 seconds at each
And memorize them if you can, just a quizlet with many different pictures of the same animal and the names is good

In Crime Busters, I think it's best to perform lots of tests on especially the powders, and just become acquainted with all the materials you'll be tested on.

In DD, a good cheat sheet is where to start. Put info on there like:
  • A list of foodborne illnesses (with info such as microbe, onset time, duration, symptoms, etc.)
  • Terms
  • Formulas (e.g. Odds Ratio)
  • Types of study bias (e.g. Cohort)
  • Types of epidemic (like Point Source)
  • 10 steps in a epidemiological investigation
  • Types of prevention (Primary, Secondary, Tertiary)

For DD, definitely just jump right into those practice tests. They are always daunting but the best way to learn this event is to familiarize yourself with the process of solving these cases, doing the math, and learning how to think like an epidemiologist. Never procrastinate on this one, just do a little every day. Here is a great practice resource:

USE THE TEST EXCHANGE A LOT. :D
Hope this helps!
(By the way, Tailsfan101 and I were partners last year so definitely listen to his advice as well.)

Hello there, I am a new person to Science Olympiad. My school is quite new to Science Olympiad, and I have a problem. My partner is unable to attend the event because she has SAT testing, so does this mean an alternate replaces her? I literally have no official partner and I am doing all the work by myself but mine also involves a lab (microscope for microbe mission). Would I still be allowed to compete even if I didn't have an actual partner there? (as in knows the information)
Sorry if my question is quite dumb.

Yes you would be allowed. Our schools first year in SO we had only 7 kids and s lot of us went solo to events just for participation. Currently, we have 14 people, and this Saturday I’ll be going into Road Scholar solo. Even though you’re short a person, it’s actually quite fun going in by yourself.
