I wish I was better at reading music. :( I'm playing bass drum for Midnight on Main Street but I keep messing up and I don't want to screw everything up but I want to learn this part... Gah, maybe I should get a tutor or something.

Eventually, it will just become automatic. I still have trouble reading alto clef (I mean, I don't play any insturments in it) and bass clef (same deal), but I'm working on it to help with composing. Just takes a lot of repition, maybe reading online explanations of time signatures and subdividing would help with percussion.

Well, practice makes perfect, but I guess that's pretty obvious :P . If you're struggling with reading notes, you could try making flashcards with notes drawn on them, and go thru them rapidly to test yourself.
Also, this might not work for you, but I find it easier to associate [note on staff] -> [what to do on instrument] rather than [note on staff] -> [name of note] -> [what to do on instrument]. Like for viola, I know that the spaces are either open or 2 fingers, and the lines are 1st or 3rd fingers (in first position). It will take me longer to think of the note's name. Though the problem with this is that I sometines accidentally play a third higher/lower than what I'm supposed to xD.

For composing, do you use Noteflight? Noteflight is great.
