Jeopardy! - IBM Challenge

Postby prelude to death » February 18th, 2011, 9:23 am

So, I don't know if any of you have seen it or heard of it, but recently on Jeopardy!, there was an IBM Challenge, where two of the best contestants of all time competed against a computer, Watson, to see/prove how smart the computer was against the contestants. I, for one, thought it was really cool, especially when Watson's thought process and top 3 answers were displayed at the bottom of the screen. Of course, I thought that we could have a discussion about Watson and Jeopardy! on this thread, but if someone disapproves, speak now or forever hold your peace. So, what did you guys think about the IBM Challenge? I know some people who thought it was boring and they were glad it was only for 3 nights, but still, isn't it exciting to think that Watson may be the beginning to our future? I thought that the people who made Watson were really intelligent and really talented people. :D

It definitely showed us where language understanding technology is at. Watson was able to get specific knowledge questions fine, but struggled with common sense things. It was interesting though, and the fact that it did so well is beyond comprehension for me. Computers are pretty awesome.

Yeah, that was a pretty funny answer, but what was interesting was how Watson lacked a lot of common sense. I mean, he rang in and said the exact same answer as Ken!

That's because Watson can't hear, and didn't know what Ken had rung in. He gave his most likely guess, which happened to be a repeat answer. And even if it could hear, Ken's answer was worded differently so it probably wouldn't have mattered anyway.

Yeah, there were a couple answers that made no sense, such as the one where the category was "US Cities" and Watson answered "Toronto".

Overall, I was impressed with the amount of information that Watson "knew", and even more impressed with the people who built and designed such a powerful supercomputer.

I loved watching Watson! I could barely stop laughing when Ken Jennings wrote "I for one welcome our new computer overlords." I think that it's really incredible that it was able to interpret the questions correctly as often as it did.

What is leg?

Those of you who've been on chat know that I was quite disappointed with the lack of produce being propelled onto the set.

Did you really think they would let people sneak rotten tomatoes (that would eventually be used as projectiles) onto the set?
