I only applied to five because those were the only five I could envision myself attending. In my opinion, you don't want to be applying to too many, because how many of those are you realistically going to go to? At a point you're just applying to see if you get in and nothing else. If you know you want one of five schools (including safety schools), why spend the money to send out more applications?

I got in to my dream school early action and decided it wasn't worth it to apply anywhere else (but I prepared applications anyway because we heard back just before the regular deadline, way too late to prepare applications). Otherwise, I had something like 12 applications lined up and ready to go for various schools.
