- XPD appeared very tier/multiplier heavy based on the scores. They supposedly asked to do some additional task that was kind of a peculiar addition.
I believe it was some sort of challenge lab scenario which doesn't really fit the description of EXPD? Seemed pretty weird and made for some interesting score distributions

Nationals 2019 XPD was a task. I just looked at Centerville XPD and the first task seemed a little peculiar but essentially it's a normal XPD exam. There are multiple experiments that could be done to satisfy the topic (which were two questions in this case). A lot of the experiments I'm thinking of now should've taken 5 minutes or less. Find an independent variable, dependent variable, and then exrapolate based on your regression to find how many in 1lb . The only difference in this case would be answering the exact question somewhere in the report (most likely the conclusion) to stay "on topic". The rest of the report should've been the same as any XPD.

- Sounds Pitch Test was supposedly weird. I asked about it here:
itsDerk wrote: February 10th, 2020, 11:20 am At Centerville, the Sounds ES used Audacity to isolate the fundamental frequency with a Fourier transform...
Yeah I was puzzled by it, our instrument usually gets within 1-3 cents with every pitch using pascioly.org/sounds, but with this tuner we were getting whole integers of Hertz off?? Particularly I remember getting 528 Hz on our C5 note, which we usually get 0 cents off on? I’ll save more discussion for the Sounds of Music thread lol

As for the astronomy test, yeah, I heard the reused test thing which is kinda unfortunate. There were a large amount of ties and close scores (11th got like one point lower than 5th) and we were lucky to win a THIRD tiebreaker (number of questions in a row we got right?) and take 8th, but like, dang. The quality of the test was quite not spectacular too, I was agonizing during the test and I honestly thought we did horrendous but we did alright thankfully lol

Dynamic Planet and Geologic Mapping had great tests! Big commendation for those two.

The Play-Doh was worth the difficulty.

itsDerk wrote: February 10th, 2020, 11:37 am - Protein on-site was supposedly not jmol (even though the section is called like "jmol exploration") rather, it was "exploring" the RCSB PDB website itself, and jmol commands/scripts weren't really a thing that exists on there.
The same thing happened at the UC competition: for a completely new ES, it could be an honest mistake but hopefully future ES's take care to read the rules, since being restricted to the website definitely limits the range of question types compared to working on the full program.
I didn't participate in this event at Centerville but looking at the test after, I thought it was...neat. Kinda interesting way to ask questions. Most tests are just about knowing a few commands. Since, as JMOLers, we have at least a little experience with RCSB, it looked quite do-able. Ik it's totally against the rules, but hey, at least it wasn't BlueJ.

I didn't record the raw scores for the individual stations but you got one point just for attempting it I was the blond-haired guy up at the front. Thanks!

I heard that you were telling people about that on discord. I'll blame you if I have to start signing more things ;)

That's very interesting, seeing as Churchill hasn't really been making any waves over in CA this year.
Feeling okay about my Kennedy - Jeffrey Trail 1-2 Nats prediction after seeing that result..
