Other people can provide more information on this than I can, but from my limited experience, it definitely helps but isn't a huge improvement over the student studying on their own. If they do not want to learn, they will not listen to you, but if they do want to learn, they would have found the information themselves. I think this applies less for builds and labs, where online information on builds is not plentiful(or I just didn't look hard enough), and it can be helpful to have someone show you how to run a lab versus watching a video and trying to figure out an optimal strategy by trial and error. It also helps students that are in-between, where they are open to learning but lack the dedication to research on their own.
It mostly provides motivation, I think, to have someone track your progress and nag you if you're slacking off.
I guess this can go either/or and that it can depend on every situation. Although some individuals/coaches working with them; on my team have motivation, they are simply not as intuned into doing well in their events as having fun, while others on our better teams are heavily more competitive, whom are driven to get those medals. However, I feel that the coaches hep to motivate some students as a whole to do better in their events. Moreover, as it was said before I have a fairly large team and I have plenty of coaches on our team depending on what events are in our cycle. I believe this year we had 3-4 official coaches, 2 dedicated head coaches, with some teachers helping out hear-or-there for many events. In the end however, it's no like the coach can go and participate for the event, it's always up to the team-members to do there job of preparing well for their own event.

My team is probably smaller than yours, but we only have about 1 solid person for each event so there was a LOT of student coaching.
Good for: people you're familiar with as they will be more likely to comply, training alternates because they don't need to know the entire event, practice events (this worked extremely well for me in code busters as I coach/have coached it for both divisions), teams without any coaches

Bad for: diversity because you're literally teaching them exactly what you know (maybe even a little less) so it's like soloing a test but with two of yourself, new members/people you have beef with, people with lots of extracurriculars because they need to devote even MORE time to create lesson plans/tests

I'm familiar with everyone on my team and have nothing better to do, so I enjoy mentoring. However, it's a case by case thing. Sometimes the best players don't make good coaches.

I wonder if people in a few years will stalk old threads and wonder what happened to 2020.

Dear future confused people: due to coronavirus closures, nats and many states and regionals got canceled.

True, but there's a tiny chance one of these posts or the whole thread might survive centuries or millennia and some poor kids doing their future equivalent with APs have to write a DBQ from a SciOly.org post. (I am spewing nonsense right now.)
