This was a playfair cipher. The key was the English translation of the German word provided, "discovery" (no quotation marks). If that was done correctly, you would get this: weirdnametoxomuchcnotenoughv. This referred to consonants and vowels, and the victim's name being "weird". This pointed to zyzyyva98, obviously.
