Fossils B/C

Post by Adi1008 » August 17th, 2020, 9:54 pm

Fossils B/C: Teams identify and classify fossils and demonstrate their knowledge of ancient life by completing tasks related to interpretation of past environments and ecosystems, adaptations and evolutionary relationships, and use of fossils in dating and correlating rock units.

I let my teammate borrow my fossils field guide for the summer, and he decided not to participate in Science Olympiad so I couldn't get it back. Oof...

Other than IDing fossils, the Geologic Time Scale, and modes of preservation and life, you need to know methods of dating (absolute and relative), the environments where fossils lived and/or where they are typically found, how to use fossils as evidence for evolutionary trends (for example, Tiktaalik), trace/index fossils, fossil-bearing sedimentary rocks (and sometimes their properties), the special conditions required for an organism to be fossilized, and most importantly have an in depth understanding of these paleontological concepts and how they work instead of just memorizing information. For a full list of everything you must know for this event, look at section 3.e. of the Fossils rules.
If you need any help figuring out what information to put in your binder or just tips for setting it up, feel free to ask any of us!
