Scioly.org Monthly Event Challenges: August 2020

Today, Scioly.org is announcing its first Scioly.org Monthly Event Challenge! This month's event will run from Friday, August 21st to Monday, August 24th, opening and closing at the same time: 3:00 PM ET / 12:00 PM PT.

Register and read the rules here before Wednesday, August 19th (3:00 PM EST / 12:00 PM PST). We will be using the new Scilympiad platform!

For August, the three events that will be run are Codebusters, Fermi Questions, and Ornithology. Codebusters will not have a timed question. Every month, three (possibly different) events will be run. One of the three may be a throwback event, in this case, Fermi Questions (from 2019)!

While this is a solo competition, be sure to share it with your teammates and encourage them to participate!

Timeline: All times on days will be 3:00 PM ET / 12:00 PM PT.

• August 10th - Registration for the August 2020 SMEC begins.
• August 19th - Registration for the August 2020 SMEC ends. Although not recommended, "Late" registration will continue until August 23rd.
• August 20th - Emails will be sent out containing instructions for Scilympiad logins.
• August 21st - Event begins!
• August 23rd - "Late" registration ends.
• August 24th - Event ends.
• August 26th - Results released.

SMEC FAQs

• May students in college compete?
  Yes. Students must be 13 years of age or older, and must be in middle school, high school or college. However, post-collegiate students may not compete. Only participants located in the United States may register for this event.

• Will there be prizes?
  As of the date of this posting, there will not be any prizes for the August 2020 Scioly.org Monthly Event Challenges.

• What do I do if I have trouble accessing the Scilympiad system, before or during my test?
  Contact sciolyperson1 via message on the Forums or by email. If you have questions about the event as a whole, contact bernard on Forums or by email.

• What events will be held in future SMECs?
  Future SEMCs will include an event rotation consisting of present and past events. Stay tuned to find out!

• Do I have to participate in Science Olympiad at my own school/homeschool in order to participate in this event?
  No! The only requirement is a Scioly.org account.

Moreover, by signing up, your personal information such as your Username, School, and state may be shared with members beyond the Scioly.org staff team for the purposes of scoring and running the event. Your username, school, state, and grade may also be shared to the public for results. We reserve the right to disqualify any participant due to suspicion of ineligibility including, but not limited to age restrictions or suspicion of academic dishonesty. Data submitted through Scilympiad will be stored through Scilympiad. Only participants located in the United States may register for this event.

Codebusters: The test will use national level rules. The test will not have a timed question.

Fermi Questions: The test will use 2019 Science Olympiad rules.

Ornithology: Online binders will be allowed (up to 450 pages, which is equivalent to a 2" binder).

Each of the tests will be 60 minutes long.

There was also a typo in the email: "Your first and last name should both your Scioly.org Username." should be corrected to "Your first and last name should both be your Scioly.org Username." (ex: Sciolyperson1 Sciolyperson1)
