Scioly.org Monthly Event Challenges: September 2020

Post by sciolyperson1 »

We are announcing Scioly.org's second Scioly.org Monthly Event Challenge, running from Friday, September 25th to Monday, September 28th, opening and closing at the same time: 3:00 PM ET / 12:00 PM PT.

We will be using Google Forms for two solo events, Experimental Design (mini SO format) and Astronomy, and Scilympiad for the partnered Science Bowl test. We chose Science Bowl as it is an event accessible to all members of the community. Use this as an opportunity to familiarize yourself with partnered tests in Scilympiad, which many tournaments will be using this season!

You will NOT need to register early for Experimental Design and Astronomy (which are run through Google Forms), but you will need to register thorugh Scilympiad ahead of time for the partnered Science Bowl event.
  • Astronomy will use the 2021 rules available from the Science Olympiad Store.
  • Experimental Design will used the modified mini SO format rules, which will be released shortly. We will link them here when released.
  • Science Bowl will use the rules here.
Full details for this month's SMEC can also be found here.

Timeline: All times on days will be 3:00 PM ET / 12:00 PM PT.
  • September 15th - Registration for the Science Bowl opens! Registration is through Google Forms, and you will login through Scilympiad later.
  • September 22nd - Registration for Science Bowl closes. This time, we will not be accepting late registrations for Scilympiad.
  • September 23rd - Emails will be sent out containing instructions for Scilympiad logins.
  • September 25th - Astronomy and Experimental Design competition starts through Google Forms! Science Bowl competition starts through Scilympiad!
  • September 28th - Event ends!
  • September 30th - Results released.

Science Bowl registration ends tonight! Remember to preregister here: https://forms.gle/tALAHVMtgPuHr2io8. It's a great way to practice using the Scilympiad platform - be sure to check it out!

Experimental Design is pending, as the MiniSO rules for the event have not come out yet. We will need to make modifications to the event.

Unfortunately, we have had to cancel Experimental Design for the September SMEC, as rules have not been released (and other circumstances). Science Bowl and Astronomy will continue on as normal.

Science Bowl instructions will be emailed tomorrow morning. Reminder that competition starts tomorrow, 3:00 PM ET / 12:00 PM PT!

The competition has started! To take Science Bowl, view the post above. To take Astronomy, the start form can be viewed here: here.

Astronomy
The start form records a timestamp of the user filling out the form and starting the test. From there, you have 50 minutes to take the test and fill out your answers in the submission form, which can also be found after submitting the start form.

If you have any questions, email [email protected].

Thank you for participating, and good luck!

As some people have asked: For science bowl, you can use any method of communication (Discord, VC, messages, etc), but you cannot meet up in person.

For Astronomy: Be sure to participate! SMEC ends this coming monday!

Thanks to everyone for participating! Results will be released by tomorrow (or the day after).

If you are interested in writing for future SMECs, fill out the form here. For more information, see the post here. We have events mostly decided for both October and November, so any events that you want to help out with are either December or later.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me through a PM here on forums or on discord (JC#4757).
