Vehicleguy,

Heli is like Wright Stuff in that the heart of the event is matching rubber to rotor and winding the motor to max.

Varying rotor blade area, blade pitch, etc. is another area of experimentation.

And, yes, creating rotor variations means rebuilding. However, you can test ideas by rebuilding maybe just the top rotor to see the effect.

If you haven't already, definitely look at the 2017 forum. Heli was the exact same event and rules that year.

Enjoy. I have eleven students from four HS with Helis built and flying and they're having fun.

How do people go about building their own prop jigs? I can 3-D print, so I'd probably just do that, but has anyone here experimented with other methods?

Here's an older Helicopter presentation from SO. The "template" page shows a basic rotor construction jig.

The Freedom Flight Models kit jig is very nice.
