How do you guys sign up for events?

For anything Science Olympiad-related that might not fall under a specific event or competition.

How do you guys sign up for events?

Post by wethose »

Does your team just have people sign up for events they're interested in?

Also, does anybody have a list of which events are under each block? If so, how could you post it here? My brain is fried and I can't even manage that

We usually have people sign up for events for tryouts and then we'll see how well they do on those events to take into account who goes into what event.

The method that lumosityfan describes is the most common, and also the one my high school used/uses. As for the tournament schedule, the LA Regional schedules don't seem to be out yet - presumably they will be posted here. If you're looking for the state tournament schedule, that is here.

We do it like lumo at the beginning of the season, but some events are definitely more under-subscribed than others, so at invitationals (especially since none of the invitationals follow our State schedule, so somebody will be hoping to do 2 events at States but they conflict with each other at invitationals so their events get moved around at invitationals) people get randomly thrown into events they didn't sign up for at the beginning of the year just because they're free that block and the events get filled. And then sometimes those people end up discovering they're decent at this event they never planned to do.

The same happened at my high school. I doubt there are any schools that can escape this.

We choose our team through tryouts, then send out a form in which competing members are to pick their top 4 event choices. We then meet to fill spots that were not chosen and finalize event placement. This year everyone was able to get their number 1 event choice, which improves motivation, even though some had to also pick up events they did not request.

Same here, except we don't choose a team because there are so few people in SciOly

For us in 7th grade we sign up for what we want to do, but as we progress we sign up for events that we're good in and focus on those.

we go through tryouts for each event (although the test writers are really bad at writing tests)
Ok this is epic 8-)

We rank our top 8 events we'd like to do, and can choose up to 3 events that we'd never want to do. Our coach then goes through the forms (which include any previous events we've done, what types of science we're best at, etc) and uses our rankings to determine who gets what, along with other factors like events conflicts, etc. We don't have enough people signing up to do tryouts, they sound fun to do though!
