How to be a good Captain for the team?

Hi, I was elected captain today of our team. (About top 12 in the state in Michigan consistently). As our team will be on the decline next year what are cool things captains can implement on the team to make it fun, competitive, etc.

You can try to establish a points system, for example, top three people who have the most documented study hours get a gift card or something. Another way is to promise a end of the year party, at like a laser tag arena or a swimming pool. This usually helps boost morale and make things fun! Good luck running the team!

1. Prepare for a lot of work. As a captain, you don't really get breaks.
2. Change your mindset. If you think your team is going to decline, it's more likely to decline.
3. Be an example. Ideally the sort of example that people would like to imitate, though that's hard to do.

If you think your team is gonna decline, it's gonna decline

hold practices, but don't make them too long or your team will burnout quick, especially if it's a high school. Probably weekly after school for an hour should do the trick. Bring food as that typically motivates people and boosts morale.

Set deadlines, especially for build events. When Our Varsity wright stuff did their plane at the last minute, they had no trim kit and their plane was extremely shoddy. They got beat by our JV3 (granted, our JV3 had been prepping 3 weeks prior).

Also, be easy to approach. You don't want to have your teammates not ask for help (especially if they don't know what they are doing) or else they won't succeed

Make sure you guys go to lots of invitationals. After we got a new coach a few years ago, our team fell apart quickly because he didn't know what he was doing and didn't look into invitationals, even with reminding. We haven't gone to states in two years due to being in a new region and not attending invitationals. Invitationals are where you can get a vibe of Science Olympiad, seeing how much fun it is, and people will want to work harder to get better. Being positive always helps, too.

That's what I was trying to say. You can't show up to an invitational unprepared and clueless, but it does teach you how SO works and who to look out for.

Have fun when you're supposed to have fun; be strict when you need to be strict. Help out the newer members of the team and that will help you gain lots of respect and makes you a good role model. I remember being a freshman and one of the senior captains helped me out a lot, so that made me want to do better in SciOly and kept me motivated. Be that upperclassman that the younger students want to become when they eventually become a junior/senior (or I guess whatever grade you are in). Sometimes, that means sacrificing a bit of your time studying/building to help others because as a captain your job is to make sure the whole team does well. After big tournaments, you can host a dinner-get together for the whole team (our team goes to Sweet Tomatoes every year after State) and this helps us bond as a team. :)

I also cant stress how important it is that you are a strong role model. The strongest motivator for any science Olympiad team is peer pressure/if you're not letting your team down. If you work hard, people will see that and follow suit, however, if noone else is working, people lose their own motivation because they feel that their work is useless anyway. Be the first to take on the most events and do well in them. Also, try to constantly provide you team with resources, it a) contributes to the team element and b) motivates them to work because finding resources can be daunting, so if you do it for them you're set. Also, just try to be overall nice, dont be too pushy or strict all the time, but at the same time be suggestive enough to entice people to work. External rewards could be good, but you might strip some members of their intrinsic motivation towards scioly.

hey thanks this sounds like a lot of great info. Yeah it seems a bit presumptuous for me to doom my team to a worse season next year and I most definitely do not want that. We actually do attend 4 invitationals with 2 teams, though only our A team ever wins them. This is another thing I want to figure out. The gap is HUGE between the A team and B team and as A team members are leaving there arent qualified individuals to take their places.
I have sort of made a name for myself by taking on almost all the build events but there is no role model on the team for events like the binder events (which I believe to be one of the hardest ones) and we are also historically very weak in WIDI.


One thing that made an impact on our team was that we were unable to go to our first invitational of the season (Northview in December) and since our next invitational was in February it made the entire team lazy and gave us all a later start.
