It's not complex at all. It's basically a ruled rod of some sort with a rubber stopper on the end. You just need to mark it based on known quantities of salt (so it floats at a certain height with no salt, and then a certain high in a .1 M salt solution, and another height at .2M, etc). I only actually did the event once, at Invitationals, so we didn't have to test the salinometer, but you test it during most competitions, it's a relatively minor part of the whole event.
