I'm more worried about the sheer scale of a Nationals sumo tournament. I'm not trying to get them to shut up, just to be a little more courteous.
I have never done sumo at nats, so I have no idea. It was just an idea, no need to jump down my throat about it.

Well think about it this way - these people that come to watch aren't just random strangers. They are the team-mates, coaches, and parents of the competitors. No matter who they are they have a reason to be quiet so that you don't "stress" out...a more important problem is cell phones and cameras. It'll be interesting to see wat happens about tha since Sumo Bots will probably have more spectators next year.

That's my primary concern- crowd control is minor compared to this, but they're pretty related. At 2009 states (I know I talk about this a lot) there were some people using cell phones to record and even talk through the bouts. It messed up my bot for a while. There will be no way for this to be controlled on the National level.
My suggestion. Set up a live feed to another area. The feed can show everyone what's happening, but there is no excessive crowd noise and no interference except for the one camera for the feed. At 2008 Nationals they had a projector screen for Robo-cross- just expand on the idea. They certainly have the resources.

Thank you, and I have another idea: Instead of scraping robots being the norm, make a minimum ground clearance. That way pushing is more important than scraping.
It is Sumo-bot, not Spatula-bot after all.

This is wat they do in real sumo-bot, this way you know whether someones off or not...

I have an idea: sumo wrestlers should have both of their arms amputated. It's so unfair that they can use those limbs to get leverage over other wrestlers. This way, head-butting each other from a standstill is more important than maneuvering and devising strategies around frame strengths and weaknesses.

It's sumo wrestling, after all, not sumo wrestling.

OK, point taken. I think it would be more interesting than the wedge competition. I doubt it will change, but I hope it will.

Science Olympiad is about innovation, you can't do that when you are forcing competitors to all go down the same path.
