Our school won the regional with 2 min 59 sec, and that is in a 23 ft gym. I think for MI state competition, with 25 ft gym, the winner will be 3 mins +.

Since state competition has bonus, a bonus wing can get a flight time over 3:30. We once made a bonus wing that does not climb very high, it flew in a 22 ft gym for 2:40+, and with bonus, it is close to 3:30.

That is certainly some impressive flying for bonus wing planes. Hope they can do well at Nationals without the unexpected problems.

Unfortunately, my daughter's school did not make the national this year. Hope next year they can do better.

Sorry to hear about your daughter's unfortunate situation. But you must congratulate her and yourself for getting a 7 cm wing plane to fly 4 minutes+. No matter what the height of the site, that is an incredible time.

I would invite you and your daughter to fly in the "unofficial" Science Olympiad event at the US Indoor Championship in Johnson City, TN, at the end of May. The USIC holds a large number of flying events and Wright Stuff will be one of them. There will be a number of very competitive student and adult Wright Stuff flyers. Some of the best indoor flyers in the U.S. might also bring their WS planes.

Recently, there was an indoor contest in Tustin, CA, in a former blimp hanger. The winning time was 5:11 !! 4:09 got last place! The 5:11 flyer will be at the US indoor Championship to take on all challengers.

Thanks a lot. Can you give me more information on the "unofficial" Science Olympiad event at the US Indoor Championship in Johnson City, TN? Or the rules are pretty much the same as the official science olympiad?

I was actually about to post about that. The bar for nationals is set at 5:11, for now. The height of Tustin was about 150-160 feet. I hear the winner has done sci oly in the past and has become quite an expert, judging by the times.


*edit* i belive they use the 2010 specs. but check to make sure.

The SO plane doesn't climb to the ceiling at Tustin, only about 80 feet. So the same kind of times can be attained at the Nationals.

So, yes, the bar is set at 5:11. I didn't think it was possible until I witnessed it myself.

Yes, for sure, 2010 rules were used. No bonus wings.

The best time was 4:00 on the state bonus wing. Calculated out it was 4:48. It was very impressive to watch. AA winner was around 4:30 also impressive. Our best time was 4:05, in practice 3:25 when it counted. It was enough for 4th place AA.

Note that if you can also compete in other events. For example, the limited penny plane (LPP) is a reasonable next step from Wright STuff. These models have a minimum weight of 3.1g and can fly more than 15 minutes at the site.
