Aww...thats too bad. Srry bout the coaches. And Crystal Lake South seems...annoying. But congratz on the medal. So u did see me? I wasn't solo (well, practically was, my partner was there, but...you know my story), she just had to leave early. But ya, i was so happy about bridge...where were you guys sitting? And as for the other tests, they were actually REALLY good. The Disease Detectives test was actually very well made and similar in topics covered to other practice tests (not that they copied, they made it according to the national rules though). As for the Experimental Design proctors, they were nice too, and the topic they gave us to work on was pretty fun honestly.courage7856 wrote:Congrats on the medals! You guys actually did really good. I saw you didn't have a fossil partner. Did you compete on your own? What were the tests like, particularily Fossils? I've heard mixed things.lllazar wrote:STATES OVER. And, seriously, i did NOT expect us to get 1st, even though we were in Div A...(Div AA was higher and Div A was lower)
Congrats to everyone else who medaled and go New Trier, Stevenson, Marie Murphie, and South, your going to NATIONALS!!!
I medaled 1st in fossils in A and 1st in Elevated Bridge in A and Overall...towers is gonna be fun next year \
Again, congrats, it was a great state tournament. And New Trier, if any of you are here, i raised a smoothy king large cup to you when you guys were taking pics on stage after winning.
I didn't do totally bad, but my team had a hard day. There was a certain incident at the hotel the night before resulting in angry coaches, and that got everyone down. My school did horrible. I was on of our 3 medal winners, and we came in 15th overall. The announcers always do this annoying "Crystal Lake *pause* Central!" It drives us crazy.
As for the test...it was fairly straight forward, they had actual fossils, however there were some little things that annoyed me, and just some things that i didnt know.
First, there were a few stations, like the bryozoan station, where asked us to identify a number of specimens that weren't in the group specimens. Keep in mind these were actual fossil samples. At some stations, they had stuff i would have never even expected, and i couldn't even ID them
Second, and this killed me...i really never did learn how to ID permineralization vs replacement vs recrystallization and what not. They had a a question on this at like 10 stations...so ya.
Also, they had like 2 vertebrate stations, and of course the two vertebrates are jawless fish and archaeoptryx. Probably the easiest and most obvious...they even said, or the question on IDing ARchaeopteryx, "this bird is know as original bird".
But honestly, the test was good. A lot better than i expected, and by that i mean that the proctor took time to make the test and she made it well, not necessarily easy or perfect, but she covered most of the topics on the list. I would have like more vertebrates and a few questions on the state fossil (Tully), and something like burgess shale.
And also, the proctor was nice enough that she gave my coach a few areas to go collect fossils as a study thing for sci oly Fossils...they were just talking when scoring (my coach is on state board, she was SOOO busy...) and the proctor was surprised that ii hadn't been to some place like Mazon creek or anything.
But ya, cant wait till next year, and guess wat...you and me will be in the same Div! We can be like fossils rivals
