Seeing one of our ninth graders in a duck hat was PRICELESS. It was one of the greatest moments of States. In fact, Pentathlon itself was one of the greatest moments.
Ha, I remember when we were carrying all our stuff out to the bus after awards, one of my Asian teammates almost throws his pile of event stuff at another teammate and runs off to collect his five dollars. And Pentathlon...all 4 of our Pentathlon team are either my good friends or people I (and the rest of the team) love to hate, so seeing them wearing duck hats and failing at the physical "challenges" was hilarious and yes, absolutely priceless. On the other hand, the most annoying part of States was hearing all of the other teams clinking and sounding like, well, a bunch of Science Olympiad kids with way too many medals clinking together, as they went up to recieve their medals while we sat there knowing we would only get few if any medals...I ended up being the only one on my team with enough medals to clink together. :| I made fun of my event partner (who medaled) because I did almost all of the work and he mostly sat there.

Just remembered more stuff.
Falling in the river at the state park we visited the day before the competition.
Playing poker at dinner.
Getting first in the State
Seeing deer on the highway (this excites me very much. I like deer)
Seeing hawks whenever I thought about hawks.
Seeing a pair of giant birds that seemed so big they must have been golden eagles.

One of my own "didn't expect a medal" stories. . .

Two years ago, at State, I did Dynamic Planet with my best friend. We had done okay at Regionals, but not spectacular, so I wasn't expecting a medal. Then we took the test, and it was more about Rocks and Minerals! They gave us a Mohs Scale chart to fill in, and we had to name the state mineral of IL. There were no questions about volcanoes, and maybe 2 about earthquakes. I had paged through the Rocks and Minerals section in the Earth Science textbook earlier that day on a whim, but we still thought we failed. When we were walking out of the building, we saw a display for the IL state mineral (flourine), and I'd guessed it right! Alphabetically, it was my first event. My partner is supersuper optimistic, so when they call out 4th and 3rd, she thinks it might be us (I'm sorta but not really pessimistic, but I didn't think we'd get one). But by the time they got to 2nd, we were both convinced it wouldn't be a medal. Then, they call us for first. It was our team's first medal, so everyone starts screaming! It was our first state medal, and as I get up, my friend whacks me on the back so hard I almost fall over! I was so excited. Every girl on our team won a medal that year.

Now, it's a joke between the two of us that if we win a medal, she slaps me.
There once was a group of teens
Who were lean mean science machines.
They liked to win medals,
when everything settles
and their favorite color was green.

That's kind of like last year at states for me. The A&R test had been really tough, and we didn't think we would be able to make it for a medal. We barely had time to ID each organism. We didn't know the frog sound, and we guessed on most questions. So at the awards ceremony, we had no hope of medaling. We got second. :D :D
