Rockets either fall apart, land out of reach, or land in reach and intact. No inbetweens.

I seems that nearly 30% or 60% works well.
Thanks :)
I would think 60% would be too much; we were told at a competition that 50% "looked like an awful lot of water." But then we won :P

Our secret is putting in 22.5%. I know it sounds insane, but we did some testing on our rockets. In one scenario, the rocket started leaking slightly, and launched with only about 20% water left.

We got a new best time. We even shot it past the fence and into the 2 acre woods behind our school. We found it about 700 ft. away and the tip had been completely crushed, probably on impact.

Using 22.5% water, how long did you manage to keep it in the air?

Has anyone found the perfect balance of strength and lightness? I made a glider that worked perfectly, but it didn't get high enough... so it ended up not doing well.

What was your time? And time doesn't matter if it was ruined.

Not if you have the resources and knowledge to build someting very similar to or better than the ruined one.

The most effective design this year has been the backslider which will always (if it is a working backslider) be a fairly long (or super long) bottle rocket that is as lightweight as possible with the center of balance put halfway in between the center of pressure and center of lateral area. However, there may be some adjustments to adapt the rocket to certain weather conditions.

Edit: Never mind. I misread the question.

How do you find the center of pressure, and the "lateral area" means the lateral area of just the cone, right????????
