The last few times this event was in they did use Hornbostel-Sachs. I don't know why they moved away from it.

That sounds okay to me... that's different from a traditional stringed instrument. But I don't play stringed instruments, so I can't really compare the two.

I would presume that's perfectly fine....a guitar I would say is not but we'll see when the clarification comes in

To my knowledge, dulcimers are percussion instruments. They're one of the few chordophone percussion instruments.
Basically all (or atleast a vast majority of) idiophones are percussion. Nearly all Membranophones are pecussion too.
Chordophones are mostly string instruments, but a few are arguably percussion (Piano, dulcimer)
Aerophones are mostly winds, except organs are classified as aerophones, though most people don't consider organs to be wind instruments, they consider them to be percussion.
Moral of the story, wait for a clarification.

I have a question for those planning to make a double clefd instrument (piano, organ, etc) as quasi percussion instruments what are your plans considering your arrangement. I mean The percussion instrument has to be bass clef right? and so are you writing the melody in bass clef or are you just doing like whole notes for the bass clef. Just wondering, we're thinking of doing something similar with pvc, and for a wind possibly a trumpet, who knows for sure though no one involved in our S.O. team is very musically oriented...

Any one instrument that needs the grand staff to notate its full range, such as a piano, would be illegal under the rules because the bass clef instrument has a maximum allowable range of C2 to D4, and the treble clef instrument is F3 to G5. (Middle C on a piano is C4.)

Also, the melody is traditionally played by the higher instrument (like violins in an orchestra), but not always.

Are we anticipating this to be an impound event or not? I don't think it's a good idea to have people running across a campus trying to get their instruments to the event on time.

It's not, according to the rules and the tentative schedule. I have no idea why though. Maybe because of space?

That makes sense, but the instruments would be safer with impound.

It's never historically been an impound event, but its always been a signup-for-a-time event, and you just bring your instruments at the time you signed up for. This way people could go when they had an opening in their schedule so theres no conflicts. I think most state competitions are gonna keep it as a free signup but Nationals isnt for some reason
